Dr. Alvergue is the author of five books, including en el norte / soy del sur (2026) and purplish: poetry anger publics (2025). His book scenery won the 2020 Poets Out Loud Editor's Prize from Fordham University Press. He has also won Tupelo Quarterly's Prose Open Prize, and has twice been honored with the Feminist Teacher Award, and once with the Feminist Mentor Award by the Race, Ethnicity, and Gender Studies program. José is interested in working with students on various projects, and past student-faculty projects have included opera, a musical, various projects in the areas of literary study, mental health, and the health humanities. Though in Eau Claire for over a decade, José grew up on the Mexico/US border and is a proud member of the Salvadoran diaspora. He has served on the Board of Directors for Pablo Center at the Confluence, and is affiliated with other non-profits in the region, including Voces de la Frontera. As an artist José believes that we, as communities and as a culture, can’t unlock the empathy hidden behind words if we don’t understand what is at stake in the risk people take when they decide to transform the matter which makes up the world around them into the story words communicate.
